Employee engagement is the extent to which employees live by and breathe the values and purpose of the employer organisation. It is the difference between employees going the extra mile to focus and deliver the organisation’s goals and services and doing the bare minimum and with bad grace, ‘quietly quitting’ as it has sometimes been referred to.
It is important for organisations to understand what the levels of engagement are, as it is not obvious to detect. Disengagement is subtle and nuanced. It creeps through an organisation sucking out vitality, goodwill and work satisfaction and resulting in engaged members of staff leaving.
Why should organisation leaders monitor levels of engagement?
Disengaged workers often provide minimum levels of service to customers and perhaps do not fully undertake their duties in accordance with the values that the Company envisage. It can be frustrating for those who are engaged, who undertake an unfair portion of the workload to make up for that of disengaged team members.
Therefore it is essential that leaders understand the levels of engagement which exist. Often data which is the most meaningful and provides good diagnostic opportunities is collated by analysing treads at regular intervals. Also by monitoring treads it enables an organisations to track the impact of interventions. Further ,monitoring facilitates the early identification of an issue. For example to identify where pockets of disengagement are emerging. Once an organisation identifies an issue it can then focus effort to identify the cause.
If a pocket of disengagement is identified this can be indicative of organisational stress and other health and safety issues.
How to Measure Engagement Reliably
Data measures are more likely to be accurate if the participants are assured that their responses are anonymous . Results are more likely to be accurate if the data is analysed externally as impartiality is more likely to be assured.
